- c.1303, from O.Fr. effrei "disturbance, fright," from V.L. *exfridare, lit. "to take out of peace," from L. ex- "out of" + Frank. *frithu "peace," from P.Gmc. *frithuz "consideration, forbearance." A word which survives almost exclusively in its pp., afraid (or affrayed, as it was still used by Keats).
